This fall, my daughter, Sacha, took me horse riding in beautiful Langley, British Columbia.

My horse’s name was Drifter, and when we trotted up to a lane that led alongside a large field, the stables owner warned me that, as soon as we cantered or galloped, Drifter would… drift.

She said he would veer right into the field, and that he always canters at an angle – side on.

She said they had found that the easiest way to curb his drifting away from the beaten track was to rein him in on the left, while giving him some heel on his right side.

Sure enough, as soon as we started cantering and picked up speed, Drifter started drifting quickly away from the rest of the horses towards the center of the field, and, as predicted, a firm left rein and some good, solid kicks on his right side brought him back into the fold.

Frankly, I would have liked to have given him the freedom to break into a gallop across the field, but one has to stick to the rules.

We had a wonderful morning, and look forward to another outride soon. (I still bounce when we canter, but that hasn’t changed since I first rode at the age of ten, so I guess I’ll always be a “bouncer”.)

Are You an Unconscious “Drifter”?

Many people drift away from their goals, veer off target, get sidetracked, and don’t know how to get back on track.

Now drifting away from the pack is a great thing if the pack is heading in the wrong direction, and we know that the seething herd usually is heading the wrong way, but if you’re working with winners and you’re part of a winning team, here are a few pointers:

4. Take advice from people who are experienced in dealing with your challenge. Drifter’s owner knew and understood both the challenge and the remedy, and she had the solution for me. Jim Stoval said:

“Never take advice from anyone who doesn’t already have what you want.”

By the same token, when you see that you’ve linked up with a bunch of losers, find yourself a winning horse that drifts easily, and gallop as fast as you can away from them.

Pride comes before the fall. Take people for granted, let your service slip, and before you know it, you’ve been replaced by a hungry competitor. 1. Respond promptly to e-mails, calls, and letters. That means FAST.
2. Pay on time. If I have to remind you, I might suspect you never intended paying.
3. Go the extra mile – add unexpected value.
4. Communicate effectively, respectfully, and regularly.
5. Reciprocate with referrals, invitations, and recognition.
6. Constantly improve your service and products.
7. THANK people for the business they send you with money or other real value.

(It can also run hand-in-hand with the avoidance of success when success would mean contribution to a hated cause or despised person, or create a situation that is more uncomfortable than the lack of success, however that is not for this discussion.)

Self-discovery takes testicular fortitude and incurs emotional pain, however the results are well worth the private confrontation.

Recognizing the root cause is one thing, however replacing it is quite another. Artificially exceeding the pain threshold by reinterpreting your circumstances and the ramifications is a smart choice.

How I Broke Free

In my case, I disciplined myself to accept the success, recalibrate and re-engineer the internal meaning and consequences thereof, and supplant the boredom with massive and intense innovation, creativity, and expansion.

The benefits of replacing the challenge in a more positive way surpassed the discomfort of recognizing a dangerous and elusive pattern that took a lot of introspection and detachment to unveil, and strict personal discipline to overcome.

Entrepreneurs have the freedom to create massive wealth, however they must first create the foundational, personal freedom that will release that wealth. My book, “Break Free!” may help a bit in that regard. (More on this later.)

Live LARGE!  …or suffer deadly boredom.

Obsessive compulsive behavior, perfectionism, high expectations, extreme sensitivity, and self-destructive tendencies often point to extreme entrepreneurial potential. Finding a way to channel the creativity in real entrepreneurs is fundamental to optimal achievement, and running the local sandwich shop or selling tires will simply drive the true entrepreneur to practice the cycle mentioned here. “Let me see if I can still do this job while I’m drunk.”

A few years ago, I was walking along Georgia street in Vancouver, when a young bum on a gleaming bicycle slid up alongside me and starting begging me earnestly for money to buy himself breakfast at MacDonald’s. In spite of the fact that I ignored him, he persisted, until I stopped his bike and told him, “You’re worse than the prostitutes on Hastings street.”

He was righteously indignant at this insult. How could I compare him, a wise and respected street beggar, to a lowly prostitute?

My answer was:

“You offer me nothing, not to clean my shoes, get a ride on your bike, wash my car, or even carry this briefcase – you want my hard-earned money simply for being around. The prostitute at least offers me her body in exchange for money. She is a capitalist, and you are a parasite, and a socialist. I have respect for those who wish to offer something in return for my money. I have no respect for you.”

Ayn Rand’s words ring in my ears as I recollect this sidewalk chat:

”The actual performance of men in society is a constant, fierce, undefined struggle between the genius and the parasite…

The genius must have his freedom and his independence…

But he is crippled, hobbled, tied, held back constantly by the encroachments and restrictions of the parasites who get their unearned sustenance from him.”

Who is Ayn Rand?

In Alan Greenspan’s new book, “The Age of Turbulence: Adventures in a New World”, he mentions Ayn Rand six times, and declares that she is one of his greatest two teachers, and that she had the greatest impact on his philosophy. More here.

Respect Money and Value or Suffer the Consequences

As Canada and the United States both teeter on the brink of embracing socialist governments, I thought relating this little exchange on a wet, West Coast city street might be pertinent.

When you pander to the collectivists, there is a dire consequence. When you sell your soul for a bowl of soup, expect to reap what you sow. Understanding money and value will prevent a society, indeed a country, from selling itself into slavery.

I’ll end off with Ayn Rand:

“The creator stands on his own judgment. The parasite follows the opinions of others.

The creator thinks, the parasite copies.

The creator produces, the parasite loots.

The creator’s concern is the conquest of nature. The parasite’s concern is the conquest of Man.
