Everything in your life is a trigger of some sort – the things you see, hear, feel, taste, read, and touch, the people you mix with, the places you go, the things you wear, what you eat and drink, your car, your home - everything is affecting you, whether you know it or not.

Peak performers carefully monitor their input, associations, diet, and environment. They control their self-talk, and set high standards for themselves.

Making the Right Adjustments

  • You know how you feel if you wear dirty or creased clothes, if you don’t groom yourself well, if you spend time with losers, or if you don’t get enough exercise or sleep.
  • And you know how you feel if you associate with winners, wear smart clothes, look your best, and go to top restaurants.

When you feel good about yourself, it’s because you have systematically created that situation, and you will achieve a lot more. Simply making the right adjustments in your life will go a long way to improving your self-esteem, and we earn money in direct proportion to our level of self-esteem.

How We Learn:

  • Taste 1%
  • Touch 1.5%
  • Smell 3.5% (yet it is the most emotional sense)
  • Hearing 11%
  • SIGHT 85%!

Because visual triggers are so important (ask any advertiser), I designed a few triggers you might want to take advantage of.

Carefully Design Your Environment

My office is very carefully designed to visually trigger motivation, work, belief, optimism, feelings of well being and success, joy, and peace of mind.

I remove anything that has a negative trigger for me. Photographs of people who hurt me get removed and replaced.

Everywhere I look, I see multiple triggers.  I surround myself with:

  • Gifts from people I like, respect, and love.
  • Reminders of past victories.
  • Reminders of future promises.
  • Symbols of success and strength.

Our entire home is like that. Rika and I are careful about our triggers, and we’re highly disciplined. Cleanliness, orderliness, and high quality are important to us.

Do Some Spring-Cleaning

Take a good look at the triggers in your life, from people to things, and do some spring-cleaning. After all, it is spring, and every day is the first day of the rest of your life. Create an environment that makes you happy, healthy, and successful.

Years ago, I was a Hotel School trainee hotel manager in a high end resort hotel in South Africa. I was working as a chef in the kitchen when the owners imported a chef from Germany. Klaus became a good friend, and we worked at many hotels together. Later, when I was a Food and Beverage Manager with Holiday Inns, I hired him as an Executive Chef. Klaus immigrated to Australia years ago.

He was all about quality.

One day Klaus found out that I played squash, so he asked me to teach him. We popped down to the local sports store in the town fifteen miles away, and I will always remember the way Klaus purchased his equipment. “What equipment do I need?” he asked the store clerk.

“Give me the best and most expensive of every item, the best shoes, socks, racket, balls… only the best. If you don’t have it order it, Get it. Get is soon.”

I was surprised, and asked him how he justified this large purchase, given that he was a new player and might not even enjoy the game, or be any good at it. I’ll never forget his response.

Words of a Winner

“Robin, I am the best chef, and I will be the best squash player. I use only the best equipment in the kitchen, I use the best ingredients, as you very well know, I produce the finest quality, and I got the best training. I am the best. In everything I do, I go for the gold – the best. Why would I buy anything less than the best? I go all the way. I go big. I don’t compromise. Ich bin nicht ein Affe (I’m not a monkey.) Let’s be the best squash players!” Klaus always went all the way, he never compromised, and he insisted on the best. He reminded me of the hero in The Fountainhead. I learned a lot from Klaus, and I will visit him in Australia. If you’re reading this, Klaus, “Yeah, Mazamba!”

Don’t tentatively test the water with your toe - throw yourself into the deep end. Believe in yourself. Go for the gold. Push the envelope. Be the best. Go big. Set and maintain your own high standards, fly in the face of convention, and you will have little competition.

Average people always deem the threat to outweigh the opportunity. They’re hooked on pain, and addicted to comfort. They are their own worst enemies. They say:

“I dig the ditch to make the money to buy the food to give me energy to dig the ditch”

…and they allow their fear to put their dreams in a wheelchair. Fear and faith cannot co-exist, anymore than winners and losers can.

Winners know…

  • Winners know that it is always too late to quit.
  • They understand that if your friend gives you poison, it will kill you, and that there are certain friends they can’t afford.
  • They insist on success, and they strive for excellence in everything they do.
  • The question is never “CAN I?” but rather, “WILL I?” and winners don’t compromise. Mediocrity and compromise are the selfish pursuit of losers.
  • Winners will not tolerate excuses and slothfulness.

An intelligent person will not allow someone else to steal their hopes and dreams, anymore than they will allow them to attack their family or rob them.

By allowing losers into your life, you hurt your friends and family, just as surely as if you invited a wolf among the sheep.  One doesn’t mix rotten fruit with fresh fruit, or poison a well.  Parasites will contaminate your life and business; they are a cancer that you should avoid at all costs.

Definition of Freedom

On the recent DollarMakers Certified Business Mentor training program, I showed the Mentors the movie, “The Fountainhead”. It is available for sale from Blockbuster Video, and I highly recommend it, and the book by Ayn Rand upon which the movie is based. In the movie, the heroine says,

“Freedom means to want nothing, to expect nothing, and to depend on nothing.”

This is a far cry from the victim’s mantra of the losers, who expect producers to carry them, pay for them, and support their bad choices. Shun them as you would a leper, or they will steal your joy and your ambition like the thieves they are.

Take Stock

Look at your circle of “friends” and decide who needs to be evicted and who needs to be drawn closer. Constantly audit your social life and be sure to seek out those who are the creators and the producers, the innovators and the winners, while removing the leeches and the snakes, and you will find yourself attracting wealth, wisdom, health, and joy.  Success is by choice, not by chance; we win by design. Shun the commonplace, and go for the gold medal.

Read the following article, and then answer the question at the end, and I think you will get a revealing insight into the extent to which your present state of mind is helping or hurting your business. Be sure to read the article first, though.

Revealed: The Changing Face of Britain: 1,650 New Immigrants Invade UK Every Day.

The number of foreigners living here has risen by 1.1 million in three years – enough to fill a city the size of Birmingham. The number of people leaving the country has also reached unprecedented levels, and nearly half of them are Britons.

  • 605,000 people enter Britain as migrants every year.
  • Pensioners outnumber children for the first time.
  • The majority (54%) of births in London are to foreign mothers.
  • Applications for asylum are up 15%.
  • A total of 888,000 Poles and Slovakians have come here to work since the expansion of the EU in 2004. But 185,573 of them are in receipt of or in line for state handouts costing taxpayers more than £211 million a year.

OK, here’s the question to answer:
What is your initial response to this abbreviated article?

There are many options – most of them emotional, biased, and entirely subjective. One could feel the rise of xenophobia, a reaction to the photograph of the Muslin women in a burka, fear, realization that Canada is going the same way, all sorts of possible reactions. Here was my reaction: “Wow! The market for DollarMakersUK is better than ever, and improving by the minute! We can help these people – great for business!” Was that your reaction?

NOW what is your response?

“Oh, well, that’s fine for Robin, but I don’t have a business in England.” Well, a Joint Venture Broker would realize that you don’t need a business in the UK to do business there.

See, it’s all about the way we interpret our circumstances and the stories we tell ourselves about our options. It’s all about choice and perception, and DollarMakers specializes in teaching people how to think about business. After all, we don’t have money problems – we have thinking problems, and Napoleon Hill taught us that:

“Every adversity, every difficulty, and every heartache carries with it the Seed of an equivalent or a greater Benefit.” He said, “Both poverty and riches are the offspring of thought.”

I can think of a multitude of opportunities to make money from the situation in the UK. We can find solutions that benefit everyone through the use of Joint Ventures.

We bought a washer/dryer at Sears. The salesman came round to my house in his own time to disconnect the water pipes at no charge, the night before delivery of the new appliances. He had a great, friendly, helpful attitude. He recommended I buy longer pipes and a longer drainage pipe so that it would fit better, which I did. When the machines were installed, the installers forgot to remove the supports, so when we turned the appliances on, they leapt around like kangaroos. The salesman came over, fixed everything, and arranged a $100 discount.

This salesman used his own, private time, got his clothes dirty, never complained, went the extra mile, and made sure we were happy customers. Amazing service. Would I want to help him, send him business, and support him in any way I could? You bet I would. Did he have to sell me anything, pitch anything, or ask for anything? No. My daughter is about to buy a new fridge. I called her and suggested she give this salesman her business.

I have an amazing insurance / financial planning guy who has been a great benefit to me and to strong businesspeople for who I have lots of respect. I refer him to people and he gives them a complimentary consultation. He saves me thousands in tax – why would I not refer him? He didn’t have to ask me to do so, because he went the extra mile. He’s reliable, honest. Astute, professional, always on time, and responds fast. You will probably e-mail me and ask for his telephone number. I’ll be glad to pass it on (if you’re in Canada.)

When you take the time to go into the forest to chop the wood, meticulously prepare the fire, get your hands dirty, and make sure the thing blazes away, you deserve to enjoy the heat, but not before. Entitlement, arrogance, socialism, shoddy service, and impatience robs many people of excellent referrals in business. It’s not about the money, honey. I don’t even know what I paid for the washer/dryer stuff – I just chose the most expensive and bought it. It’s all about the service.

“If you want a friend, BE a friend” – good advice. If you want benefits, you have to contribute. When the contribution stops, losers don’t understand why they’re not still enjoying the benefits. Create massive, unexpected, glittering value, and you can rest assured smart people will reciprocate. We bought expensive hardwood flooring from Home Depot and had it delivered and unpacked. Then we sent it all back again three days later since the floor was too uneven. They collected it and didn’t charge us a blue cent. They even paid the delivery and the installers. They didn’t have to. Now we’re loyal customers, and this article will be read by thousands of people.

Yes, what goes around comes around. Keep your promises, deliver on time, be friendly and helpful, and you will have little competition. Give additional service and go the extra mile, and your success is all but guaranteed if you’re serving good people. If not, you’ll wake up one morning to find you have been replaced by someone who understands this. We help those who help us. The good news is that you can use Joint Ventures to create MASSIVE additional value that your competition can never equal, at no cost to you.

“The greatest wealth is health.” ~Virgil

Money and time, happy relationships, confidence, the achievement of our goals, and peace of mind are not quite as valuable when you have no health. While the former will certainly allow you to “suffer in comfort”,
bad health adversely affects every area of your life, and every area of your life affects your health.

However I believe that drug companies, many doctors, and the snake oil salesmen who are essentially the purveyors of lotions, potions, farcical diets, absurd juices, organic junk and magic spells to relive desperate,
vulnerable, suffering people and hypochondriacs of their hard-earned money, carefully complicate the concept of health in their own selfish interests.

“The best six doctors anywhere
And no one can deny it
Are sunshine, water, rest, and air
Exercise and diet.
These six will gladly you attend
If only you are willing
Your mind they’ll ease
Your will they’ll mend
And charge you not a shilling.”
~Nursery rhyme quoted by Wayne Fields, What the River Knows, 1990

Here are the facts as I see them regarding health. Use more calories up through exercise than the calories you consume. Let’s apply the following to FAT:

“Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure nineteen six, result happiness. Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure twenty pound ought and six, result misery.”
~ Charles Dickens

To me, that means that if I eat more calories than I use up, I get fat. It’s not water retention – it’s disgusting fat. If you smoke, not only do you offend the people around you who wisely choose not to smoke with your
filthy, stinking addiction, not only do you blatantly demonstrate the fact that you do not care about those you offend and that you are incapable of the self-discipline to quit smoking, but you also make it clear that your real self-esteem is pretty low. Smoking will not make you healthy. Heavy drinking will not improve your health. Eating bad food will have a negative effect on you. Smoking weed will damage what brain cells you have left.

It’s that simple: disciple yourself to eat right, don’t smoke, get exercise, get some sunlight, and get over your weak excuses. AS you discipline yourself, your self-esteem will increase, and this will affect every other area of your life in a very positive manner.

“Joy and Temperance and Repose Slam the door on the doctor’s nose.”
~Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

It’s basic, common sense. I don’t need to buy your overpriced vitamins on auto ship. I don’t need health club membership. I can drink more water, eat more fruit, and climb the stairs or walk around the lake.

“To feel keenly the poetry of a morning’s roses, one has to have just escaped from the claws of this vulture which we call sickness.”
~ Henri Frederic Amiel

Good relationships, peace of mind, sufficient money, and good friends will increase your health. Keep it simple and stop wasting your time and money on ridiculous schemes and dreams and quick fix silver bullets that will inevitable prove to b duds.

“A good laugh and a long sleep are the best cures in the doctor’s book.”
~Irish Proverb

Stop making excuses, start making changes, and get healthy. You deserve it!

“I see rejection in my skin, worry in my cancers, bitterness and hate in my aching joints. I failed to take care of my mind, and so my body now goes to hospital.”
~Astrid Alauda

Affirmations are essentially a personal self-improvement and self-motivation technique.

Having some Daily Affirmations that you recite to yourself at least twice a day will do wonders to change your life. Changing your life is not difficult, as it is simply a matter of reprogramming yourself. Repeating some really good affirmations will do wonders for you, such as:

  • Your thinking and emotional state becomes more positive
  • You have increased self-assurance and self-acceptance
  • You begin taking more purposeful action
  • Enhanced vitality and passion for life
  • People treat you with more respect and interest
  • You experience greater happiness and joy
  • You have a renewed sense of personal power (Just like when you were a kid)
